So I’m ramping up to relaunch my old blog, jamiesbrain.com. I’m going back and looking at my old show reviews, and I’ll have to say, I’m pretty stoked. I’ve seen some great shows over the past few years. In case you’re interested in reminiscing, as well as seeing how my writing has evolved (b/c some of it truly sucks), check out some of these oldies but goodies.
Audioslave, Bill Graham Civic in SF, August 2005. Almost front row GA.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Golden Gate Park, October 2005. Nowhere near the front.
LCD Soundsystem, The Fillmore, October 2005 Haha! Most of you hadn’t heard of them yet! Only about 150 in-tha-know peeps there.
Weezer/Foo Fighters @ Oakland Coliseum, October 2005. Funny show. Rivers Cuomo, we’re glad you’re coming back.
Nine Inch Nails, SBC Center, San Antonio, October 2005. My first fan club show. 2nd row in front of Aaron.
Lady Sovereign/The Streets, The Fillmore, June 2006. A few rows back, and luckily, nowhere in jumping distance of the balcony.
BFD 2006, Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA, June 2006. First row of the second tier.
every move a picture/the rakes, GAMH, July 2006. Tiny venue.
Nine Inch Nails/Bauhaus/Peaches, Shoreline Amphitheater, July 2006 9th row I think, almost in the middle. Sick.
Guns ‘n Roses, The Warfield, September 2006. Second row GA.
Download Festival: Beck, YYYs, Muse, The Shins, TV on the Radio, Shoreline Amphitheater, October 2006. 10th row? Enough to get blown away by Muse.
Brief reviews of Fischerspooner, Candlebox, Zero 7, and Every Move a Picture. All fairly small GA shows.
Bridge School Benefit: Neil Young, DMB, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor, Death Cab, Gillian Welch, and Devendra Banhart, Shoreline Amphitheater, October 2006. 7th row smack in the center. Most expensive tix I ever bought.
Brief reviews of Placebo, She Wants Revenge, Gomez, Snoop Dogg, and Shooter Jennings . Varied positions at GA.
Brief reviews of GWAR, Hot Chip, Alice in Chains, The Faint, and Prince. All GA shows, close enough to get sufficiently hurt.
And then, hardrockchick.com was born. Hope you’re enjoying it as much as I am!!!
P.S. Damn, I spent a lot of money on tix. Someone please start guestlisting me! It’s my only HRC goal!
P.P.S. I’m even missing lots of shows: there should be some more NIN (2), Bright Eyes (2), Willie Nelson (3?), David Bowie (1), The Faint (1), Jack Johnson (1), Atmosphere (2), Peaches (1), Pinback (1), The Shins (1), Beastie Boys (1), ACL Festival 2004, and Bob Dylan (2) reviews…Am I crazy?
Genre(s): Live and In The Flesh
Ah, tantrum Trent. He’s affected by the perfectionist demon that I oft suffer from as well. Us spiralers love the nuances from show to show, the awareness of the live sound, and the occasional outburst. While there are many of these on record, this by far is my favorite. I will forever pretend that I am doing this next time my computer malfunctions.
Genre(s): Nine Inch Nails
While many fans are in a huff about this video, I think The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly motif works well. I mean, these guys are all kind of cowboys, aren’t they? A spaghetti western in a CGI world- they deliver a certain authenticity and rebellion that is currently underserved. July 3rd…hurry up! Libertad!
Genre(s): Rock Video
Do you like Norwegian Black Metal? How about Adult Swim? Spinal Tap? It’s all here. Metalocalypse is a caricature cartoon of a very caricatureable subject- metal. Not up on your Norwegian Black Metal? Here’s a snippet:
OK, so maybe some of it isn’t very funny. But Metalocalypse does a good job of confronting the humorous parts- demon voices, crazy fans, extreme themes. Hey, if talking junk food can be an adult swim hit, then Metalocalypse has a chance.
Genre(s): Rockin' Things To Do
Check out the new video here. Supposedly, it’s a commentary on our immigration situation. I still can’t get past the name….
Genre(s): Rock Video
Wow. You know when they have a name that they are really hardcore.
Genre(s): Concerts Gone Wild
The Ramones are a band that I should know more about. I was mildly familiar with their cultural cache, their influence, their movement…but I never understood the magnitude of it until I saw Ramones—–Raw. The Ramoniacs, the fashion, the singing stance- it’s all there. The Ramones are part geek rock, part reluctant rock stars, part rebel, and part punk kings. Their sound- that unmistakable bouncy beat, deck eating the tape sound, and megaphone vocals captivated a generation. It’s weird, huh? It doesn’t sound appealing, but The Ramones represent a snapshot of a subculture. The punks- dressed in the Ramone’s uniform- ripped shirts, torn jeans, keds or chuck taylors, and a rocker jacket. And the hair- you can never forget the hair.
Genre(s): Rockumentaries
Music makes people do crazy things. Mix that with youtube, and here’s what you get.
1. Closer, Nine Inch Nails
This video is too funny.
2. I Don’t Like the Drugs, But the Drugs Like Me, Marilyn Manson
3. Pour Some Sugar On Me, Def Leppard
4. Play, David Banner
Yeah, I think that’s a mom there. MILF?
5. Dragula, Rob Zombie
The things that strippers can do with poles never cease to amaze me.
Genre(s): Top 5
It must be cool to be such a shapeshifter of an actor that Johnny Depp can maintain his coolness for so long…and talk his friend Keith Richards into playing a part in a Disney movie. I’d love to see how that convo went….”Keith, will you play my dad in this pirate movie?”
