HRC’s year started rather imperfectly. I went out to the Rock-It Room an this particular evening to see Astra Heights, a band which my schedule never seems to synch up with. I had to leave before they came on (my show partner was ill).
Nonetheless, I saw most of the Low Sea Roar set, which was some good sounding skater rock. They play a lot around town. They seem to be a very young band that needs a few more rounds to take off some rough edges, but showed promise. Their drummer is female, and her look appears to be very straight laced for a rock band. Interesting.

Jubilee is where Aaron North is spending his time now that he’s not touring with NIN. He’s still playing the guitar, but he is singing as well. He’s got a nice voice….not what I expected.

Bay Area!
Going to see Too Short after a week of shock rock is a bit of a hard transition. Granted, Too Short is known for his rather explicitly dirty lyrics. But I’ve been wanting to see a Too Short show since I moved here, and the little taste I got when he came on stage with Snoop Dogg wasn’t enough.
I have also been wanting to check out 1015 Folsom, since it’s new management has proclaimed that it wants to start competing as a music venue alongside places like Mezzanine.

1. Twiggy Ramirez/Jeordie White of Marilyn Manson, Goon Moon, A Perfect Circle, and Nine Inch Nails
2. Mike Inez of Alice in Chains (It’s hard to find video that doesn’t focus on Layne or Jerry)

Last year, I finally was able to see Manson for the first time. It was something I had been waiting to do for 10 years. While I was really happy with the show, and rated it as one of my top shows last year, this show at The Warfield was about a hundred times better. It actually held a candle to a NIN show, which is a statement I don’t throw around lightly.
When the announcement was made that Jeordie would be coming back on as bassist, I was ecstatic. I was a little sad that Tim Skold wasn’t coming back, and my reach for the stars imagination entertained thoughts of John 5, but we all know that those chances are slim to none.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening at Thee Parkside, making the punky dive venue seem grungier than ever. It’s a night of 2 bands comprised of local game developers, kicking off the Game Developer’s Convention, and 1 band that had absolutely nothing to do with videogames.
The night started with 8 Bit Idiots, who played an amped up version of the set that I saw last Halloween. They ended their set with War Pigs, a song which both their rendition and the current state of affairs made seem so relevant.
The Doormats followed, and had a bit of a lineup change since last time I saw them. They played some new tunes that veered from their usual punk format and into the surf rock realm. It’s quite amazing how many genres were covered in this one evening.
