A slightly predictable, but nonetheless good lineup of artists have been announced for the second annual TI festival. Many of these artists have played around here lately. Nonetheless, if you can grab a $99 2 day presale ticket, it’s definitely worth it.

Cafe du Nord has to be one of the most intimate venues in SF. The whole narrow room in the basement vibe makes it feel like a party at someone’s house. This is why it is such a great place to see a musician, and likewise why the venue is often used as a warm up for artists that could easily sell out something much larger. The Oysterfest in San Francisco is not the place I would expect to catch a kick ass set. But apparently, Oysterfest is light on oysters, and hard on rock. An interesting theme running through the stellar lineup of this 2 day festival was 2 acts featuring actresses: Juliette & The Licks, featuring Juliette Lewis of Natural Born Killers and Strange Days fame, and She & Him, featuring Zooey Deschanel of Almost Famous fame. Juliette & The Licks are not just some band fronted by an actress trying unsuccessfully to live out some closeted rock fantasy. They successfully make it a work, and I’m only reminded of the acting past when the guy behind me yells, “I love you, Mallory!” In a world of female fronted rock bands that fall short on believability, I felt myself wanting to be her on stage, an emotion I rarely experience. I know I just kinda dissed Atmosphere in my live review of them last week, but this interview made me feel a little better. The best part is when Slug talks about the Black Eyed Peas… Filed under: Rock Video Comments: None |

When I first discovered Atmosphere 5 or so years ago, I remember thinking that perhaps it was like the grunge movement for hip hop. It’s minimalist, dirty sounding, but still melodic and catchy with smart lyrics. In a market crowded with Dirty South, Corporate Hip Hop, and remnants of Gangsta Rap, it stood out. Also, Slug reminded me of a guy I would hang out with in high school, an approachable lead guy kind of in the same vein as Dave Grohl. I particularly loved his vocals, which are velvety and intense, their storytelling heavy songs, and performances that highlight a subdued anger that can only come from someone who has had a rocky past. I’ve seen Atmosphere at least 2 times before, on hot nights at Emo’s Austin. They were great shows. This show, however, was like seeing an entirely different artist. It felt like Atmosphere Lite. Got my presale tickets to the first US show of the tour. The presale went pretty smoothly, but the tickets are more expensive than they used to be. That’s what we get for getting so much free music nowadays. July 26th seems so far away. It feels a little overwhelming to think that there have been 2 new album since I last saw them live. I hope there are still some old faves in the set beyond Closer/Hurt/Head Like a Hole in there…. Filed under: Nine Inch Nails Comments: None |

Seattle’s Daguerreotypes rock an interesting blend of a psychedelic and folk sound. It’s a big band- 6 members- leading to a pretty complex sound. Filed under: Myspace Find Comments: 1 Comment |
