The Black Crayons, from LA, are a nice addition to the slowly surging neo-psychedelic movement. They have a Southern rock slant, that reflects their influences list of bands like Spindrift and Beck. Filed under: Myspace Find Comments: None |

It’s the most packed I’ve ever seen The Fillmore. Or, perhaps I usually arrive much earlier and am in the front row, unaware of what is going on behind me. I’m only able to stand in about the 10th row, and it sucks. Damn, I am spoiled. Billy Idol is an icon: the spiky white blond hair, those lips, great bone structure. At 52, he’s kept it up quite well. In this hit laden evening, he manages to do about 8 ‘costume’ changes- sporting different shirts each time. He plays some good air guitar and drums- and would probably beat many of last night’s competitors. There’s lots of fist pumps and dancing around. He’s energetic, and makes a lot of eye contact with the audience, pointing at people further back in the crowd, handing out drumsticks. His voice is still phenomenal, showing no age. As I stand in front of the stage at The Independent, I ponder why I am here to watch people play air guitar. Is it because I love guitar so much that I’m willing to pay to watch people pretend to play one? Or am I a phony guitar fan, because any self respecting guitarist admirer would never be caught dead at one of these? What it comes down to is, who cares- because Air Guitar events are awesome.

There’s something highly comical about seeing Dethklok, Ted Nugent, and now She Wants Revenge at The Fillmore in the span of two weeks. Different vibes, different dress codes abound as tonight represents the fashion hip, sexy beat craving dancing freak. I’ve been following SWR since before their first record released in 2006. They catch a lot of flack for sounding like other bands- Interpol, mostly-…but really they all sound like Depeche Mode, who sounds like Joy Division. Get over it. Ted Nugent is about as polarizing a figure as they come. Crazy/genius…those are the words often used to describe him. Both sides were felt as we walked into The Fillmore- the venue alone signals you’re going to see someone great, and then a glance at the stage, with it’s Uncle Sam caricature of Uncle Ted, 50 calibur machine gun, animal pelts, skulls, bow, and flags, reminds you that he is at the extreme end of the conservative spectrum that you hate. Another glance around the room makes me wonder where all these people came from. Bubba from Concord, Jimmy from Vallejo…camo and caps are the uniform of choice here. Not a hipster in sight. I giggle thinking about how different the crowd is just a few miles away at the George Michael concert. Wild guitar playing, screams and kicks start the set. The energy is high and never lulls for nearly 2 hours- an impressive feat for a 60 year old man. The first song he launches into is the Star Spangled Banner. Duh. It’s 11:30p on a Tuesday, and I’m in the basement of a remote hipster bar far removed from mainstream SF. I’ve just been served a Corona by a pretty Eastern European bartender who barely knew a lick of English, and now I’m sipping it in the cabin of an airplane. Really, the airplane decor complete with blinking lights is a bit disorienting down here. And now I am about to hear the psychedelic craziness that is White Pee. It is hard to review White Pee, as it is hard to review jazz. After what appeared to be a difficult set up, the 4- potentially 5- piece launched into a 30 minute plus ’song’. It’s like a scene from a low budget Lynch film. The drummer looks like he’s doing his own thing in the back, the bassist slowly paces the stage, the guitarist sits on his amp and never looks up, and the ’singer’/bloops and bleeps guy twiddles around on multiple complex looking devices. And there’s a guy standing against the wall in the audience with a tambourine. The whole thing made me feel like I was going crazy- in a good way. Sort of. I like the agitating effects of the unexpected beats, but I need breaks and songs, and maybe a hint at melody here and there. And, to be honest, White Pee is a band name that kinda scares me.
