A slightly old Rolling Stone article discusses how China is strict with letting in bands to tour in their country. Apparently Avril Lavigne and Good Charlotte have had to postpone gigs due to restrictions. The review process that a band must undergo before receiving permits to play in China is rigorous- they gather background info that includes song lyrics, bios, and the likely setlist for the show. What is interesting is that the article mentions that NIN and Linkin Park were cleared with no problems. Apparently ‘I wanna fuck you like an animal’ is completely acceptable, but ‘Girlfriend’ presents problems for national security. See, the Chinese get it. NIN is way better than Avril Lavigne. Hannah Montana leads a double life- where she is a ‘rock star’ in one of them. Millions of preteen girls declare their desire to be rock stars while listening to Hannah Montana’s incredibly poppy tunes. The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame 2008 inductees include Madonna to keep company with the likes of Van Halen, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. Several dead rock stars roll over in their graves. Mosh pits form at every concert from Slayer (real) to Justice (kind of uncalled for). Let’s not even talk about throwing devil horns at Jack Johnson. And Rolling Stone frequently puts people like Britney on their covers. Ugh. Is rock music losing its cool? Yeah, it is. Rock has been bastardized to the generic levels of Kleenex, Rollerblades, and Ziploc bags. This is why I have to be the Hard Rock Chick instead of just a rock chick. And the most unexpected thing might save the term- videogames. Rock Band and Guitar Hero, whose track lists include mostly real rock music, have entered the homes of millions of uneducated individuals, teaching them what rock is with every button push. Long live headbanging. Filed under: Rock Hypotheticals Comments: None |

I am constantly searching for a good, local industrial hard rock band. It’s been a long search. Most things border too much on dancey/techno or go too light. When I came across Vin Rouge, I got really excited. Psychedelic/Industrial/Rock? Yes, please. The few tracks up on MySpace had me a bit confused, though. There was a tad industrial in there, and then there was a track that was decidedly not. I asked them how they came up with their name in my monthly question, and was pleased with a Lynch reference. It was time to see them live. Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: None |

I’m surprised that he’s opening the door on his personal life a bit. Dinner with dad? This guy knows how to fuel the fire. Oodles of female fans were just driven a little more mad. Filed under: Nine Inch Nails Comments: None |

The old MTV. The one that was such a part of making me love music. I’d like them to start with fixing the MTV VMAs, and after reading this article on the host, Russel Brand, I have a little hope. My fingers are crossed, but I will not hold my breath. Filed under: Rock in the News Comments: None |

You must see them before you die, this is an order! Theses are bands that IMHO are the best bang for your buck. I have seen/will see them multiple times and they never get old, always leave you satisfied and wanting more. I would adjust my schedule around their shows any day, and you should, too. 1. NIN (will have seen 7 times by next month) Intense. Dark. Passionate. 2. The Dillinger Escape Plan (once) Frantic. In your face. Violent. Filed under: Top 5 Comments: 1 Comment |

Otep endlessly posted myspace bulletins urging her followers to register, and it paid off. She played at tonight’s Democratic National convention, where she is sure to be pissed off at that crowd for not getting into it. Filed under: Rock in the News Comments: 5 Comments |

Things I love about festivals: 1. The need for a mission: Save the Environment! Eat organic! Save energy! Register to vote! Safe sex! Things I hate about festivals: 1. Everything except see above. We’re not even going to talk about how I got sick and missed Radiohead on Friday. Instead, we’ll start with Saturday at 5pm, when I am walking down one of Golden Gate Parks labyrinthian streets, wondering if I am going to reach an entrance. Besides a few unlabeled barricades, there wasn’t any indication that a festival was even going on in the depth’s of the park. Not one sign. As I’m walking, the street is littered with hoodlums and vagrants, having been kicked out of the park they were left to pester the concert goers. Many were jumping the fence into the festival, and I watched my $255 ticket price degrade with each one of them. Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: 3 Comments |

Less than two weeks after claiming the US Air Guitar Championship, Hot Lixx Hulahan has been crowned the World Air Guitar Champion. Watch this video for Bjorn Turoque’s behind the scenes footage of the competition. Hot Lixx, a 2 time US Champion, takes the 2nd ever World title for the US. C-Diddy won in the US’s inaugural year in the 2003 competition, as documented in Air Guitar Nation. Perhaps I should go check out his real guitar skills in one of his bands- Rocket Queens (G ‘n R tribute band!) or Love Songs… Filed under: Just Announced Comments: None |
