Goblin Cock, Warship, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band @ Rickshaw Stop, 2/26/09

by hardrockchick [about 1 year, 6 months ago.]

Ah….Noise Pop. I generally can find one non-uber indie rock snob show to attend per festival. The Rickshaw is a place I only sporadically attend for shows….but occasionally, they pull a really good one out. I saw M.I.A. here, and it was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen. It’s tiny, the sound is LOUD, and the attendees are always cutting edge tastemakers.

I caught the last few songs of Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, which is not a band for me. They wear vests. Their only female member has the mindless task of thumping two staffs with tambourine type materials on the ground like ski poles. As is often the case w/ Noise Pop shows, I feel like someone randomly stuck this band into the lineup. I don’t get it.

Next was Warship, deemed “metalcore innovators”. Hmmm…The three piece shocked me when they started playing and the singing came from the drummer. Now, I’ve seen bands do a song where the drummer sings, but never an entire set. You’d think it would be impressive…and it was, for a bit. But, I found the whole setup discombobulating. For one, having the drummer do the singing gave me the odd thought that the guitarist and bassist were lazy. Like, they’re ONLY playing the guitar. I realize that sounds odd, but coupled with the fact that the balance just felt off with the singing coming from the back of the stage, it just didn’t do it for me. That, and the vocals are decidedly emo. Not for me.

Finally, time for Goblin Cock. The stage is being set up by the band, but they are wearing shirts and trucker caps that say ‘Goblin Cock Crew’ and ‘Goblin Cock’s Guitar Tech’ and such. One guitar has a sticker that says ‘Slut’ by the frets. Some skulls are placed on the keyboards. The fog juice is poured, some ‘tallica is cranked, and it’s time for Goblin Cock.

The band reemerges wearing cloaks, each with their own personality. The guitarist’s face is covered in sheer black. The horns go up- the most deliberate horns I’ve ever seen thrown by a band. Now, the name Goblin Cock might lead you to believe that this is some kind of joke. And to a certain extent, it is. Goblin Cock is making fun of metal a bit. It’s a side project of sorts for Pinback, who are about as indie and indie rock gets. So, they’re basically telling us that they are an indie rock band that can crank out some really awesome doom metal, and because they aren’t by nature a metal band, they are going to compensate by having a ridiculous name, a high concept aesthetic, and an overly metal stage presence. I love it.

Lead singer Rob Crow is an enigmatic frontman, and that is saying a lot considering all but his mouth was covered. His intermittent “WE ARRRRRE GOBLINNNNNNNNNNN cock.” statements were hilarious.

They meandered through tracks from their two albums, as well as some outstanding covers, such as Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” (video below). I could have sworn that I heard a bit of “Seek and Destroy” in there, as well as “Relax (Don’t Do It)”. They do not use a setlist, so I was unable to confirm any of this :(

The band plays what can best be described as a three song medley, one song dripping into the other, then they take a break, throw some horns, hold up the skulls, say some funny things, and go back at it. The heavy bass was so loud that I thought my ear plugs weren’t in. Standouts were “Tom’s Song for TOF”, which they play a bit faster than the recorded version, “We Got a Bleeder”, “The Porpoise Song”, and “Kegrah the Dragon Killer” (probably my personal fave).

Crow’s voice is so cool. It is just perfectly pitched all the time, cutting the sludge of the music like an acid. They are all very technical musicians, effortlessly playing while displaying great showmanship.

Honestly, I don’t know how they can go back to playing Pinback shows after this. If the moshpit of atypical moshers at the Rickshaw, as well as good energy by everyone else in the crowd, was any indication of Goblin Cock’s effect on the crowd, it has to be a high for them. I saw Pinback when HRC was just a glimmer in my eye, and I remember being bored.

This was anything but. I can say without a doubt that, like the shirts they were selling at merch, I Love Goblin Cock.

NIN launching iPhone app ‘soon’

by hardrockchick [about 1 year, 6 months ago.]

via nin.com forums

avi

app

“A few things…

We are putting the final touches on our iPhone application and we are aiming to have it in the app store by April 1. This is NOT to be lumped in with the major-label band app drivel that’s coming out now. This is a new, cool, hopefully useful app aimed at the NIN fan that will be particularly good if you’re seeing us on tour. It will make you smarter, healthier and more attractive to the opposite sex (if that’s your thing)… and it’s free. We’re planning on a pre-release demo video as soon as we have a stable build.

Also, the set lists for tours post Australia will be much more varied than what we’re currently playing. The fault lies with me in underestimating the time of converting the band to a four-piece Powered By Ilan™ as well as spending a lot of time with Jane’s Addiction during our rehearsal time before AUS/NZ run.

So there!
TR”

What will it be? My guess/wishlist:
-attendees can vote on what songs can be on the setlist
-some sort of interaction with the set while in progress
-contest of sorts..treasure hunts for VIP tickets, backstage pass…

Interview with Kristofer Dommin of Dommin

by hardrockchick [about 1 year, 6 months ago.]

In a little over a month, I’ve seen Dommin twice. I’m quite captivated by their sound- the darkness of Depeche Mode, the drama of Type O Negative, the classic-ness of Elvis. I know they are going to blow up to be big rock stars. Luckily, I was able to squeeze in an interview with lead singer and guitarist, Kristofer Dommin. Granted, I was unable to perform the interview in an inside out ski mask…but here it is, nonetheless.

“Those songs have real meaning for me and I hope all the songs get a chance be heard.”

Hard Rock Chick: What is Dommin’s backstory? How long have you been together? How did you meet?

Kristofer Dommin: I’ve been recording songs and playing shows for about 10 years with this music. There have been some line-up changes along the way but I’ve known Billy James, my bass player, since I was about 8 years old. I met Konstantine, the keyboardist, about 3 years ago at a day job and Cameron, the drummer, just joined last year.

HRC: What lead up to signing with Roadrunner Records late last year? You seem to have quite a following on MySpace, as well as regionally in SoCal.

KD: We showcased for Roadrunner. I think in addition to that, just playing shows, growing our audience, and connecting with our MySpace friends was instrumental. However, I think self-producing our first video really put things into perspective.

HRC: How is the new album coming along? Judging from your blog, it sounds like you had an interesting time recording it.

KD: The new album is done and we’re all excited about it’s release. The recording process had a few bumps in the road in the beginning that left us without a studio and made us a bit worried about how we were going to finish the album. But all in all, things worked out for the better. And I think finishing the recording at a Edge of the Earth Studios was a better experience than it would have been had we stayed at the old facility.

HRC: How was it to bring songs from Mend Your Misery over to the new album?

KD: I think it was an easy decision on everyone’s part. Personally, I just wanted these songs to be heard. I think the songs that didn’t make the first album cut will be revisited for later albums. Those songs have real meaning for me and I hope all the songs get a chance be heard.

“It ends up being a bit therapeutic to make something beautiful out of something painful.”

HRC: The themes in your songwriting seem really personal….and painful. Is it ever hard to share those kinds of experiences, especially when you go to perform them live?

KD: To be honest, I don’t really think about it. I just do it. It ends up being a bit therapeutic to make something beautiful out of something painful. Any time you can turn a negative into a positive
result, it’s rewarding.

HRC: It seems that you’re the type of band that puts a lot of thought into your aesthetic- which is a good thing. Are there any artists or films that have particularly influenced you in that sense?

KD: I like the 30′s and 40′s Film Noir vibe in movies like “Mildred Pierce” and “Gilda”. But I think modern films like Sin City and 300 really capture something fantastical as well. So we’re working on a lot of things that will hopefully turn my mental vision into a tangible reality.

HRC: Tell me about making the video for “My Heart Your Hands”.

KD: It started as one of those things where you light a match that spreads into a wildfire. Ideas were being tossed around between Konstantine and I that just blossomed into the story-line. Konstantine has a real interest in cinematography. He directed and edited the video. Between his talents and my aesthetic vision for Dommin, we make a good team.

HRC: How did the tour with Combichrist and Black Light Burns go? Any good tour stories to share?

KD: Aside from the generous crowd reactions in almost every city we played, there is one story I’m not proud of. Our first gig on the tour was in Tempe, Arizona and we didn’t take into account the time change. We were about a half an hour late as it was. Once we crossed the border from California into Arizona, we ended up realizing we’d be an hour and a half late. We had about 15 minutes to get our gear on stage before the doors to the venue opened. It wasn’t the best first impression to make to our gracious tour mates. Fortunately, they were all very understanding.

HRC: What else is on the horizon for you?

KD: There will be a new video done for “My Heart, Your Hands” in the coming weeks. Our EPK* will start to be posted on our site setting up our album release. But I think the biggest thing is that the tour opportunities are starting to stack up for the foreseeable future. We’ll be on the road a lot, visiting as many places as possible. I am really excited to get out there and meet everyone.
