It’s 11:30p on a Tuesday, and I’m in the basement of a remote hipster bar far removed from mainstream SF. I’ve just been served a Corona by a pretty Eastern European bartender who barely knew a lick of English, and now I’m sipping it in the cabin of an airplane. Really, the airplane decor complete with blinking lights is a bit disorienting down here. And now I am about to hear the psychedelic craziness that is White Pee. It is hard to review White Pee, as it is hard to review jazz. After what appeared to be a difficult set up, the 4- potentially 5- piece launched into a 30 minute plus ’song’. It’s like a scene from a low budget Lynch film. The drummer looks like he’s doing his own thing in the back, the bassist slowly paces the stage, the guitarist sits on his amp and never looks up, and the ’singer’/bloops and bleeps guy twiddles around on multiple complex looking devices. And there’s a guy standing against the wall in the audience with a tambourine. The whole thing made me feel like I was going crazy- in a good way. Sort of. I like the agitating effects of the unexpected beats, but I need breaks and songs, and maybe a hint at melody here and there. And, to be honest, White Pee is a band name that kinda scares me. If you are really a fan of a band, then you take the time to learn more about the musicians. If you’re really really a fan of a band, you listen to and go see the musicians side projects. I’m really really a fan of The Faint, and Broken Spindles is Joel Petersen’s- bassist for The Faint- side project. Let’s use an analogy about bands and side projects: listing to a band is like eating a casserole. If you never listened to one of the musician’s side projects, you’d never know what the ingredients taste like. Broken Spindles is the space electro rock, slightly suicidal ingredient to The Faint. It’s pretty ‘out there’: avant garde, songs blend together and end abruptly kind of thing. I often don’t know when to clap. But this guy goes beyond musician- he’s an artist. This is not for the masses. “The last song was about death. The next song is about death…” It’s mood music; fitting, since this whole thing started when a friend needed a soundtrack to a film. Haunting and unpredictable, it’s not the kind of show I normally go to, but I still enjoyed it. We briefly chatted with Joel at the merch booth. Mentioning we are fans of The Faint, when asked about the upcoming album he said “we’re happy with it”. I can’t wait! OVERALL: 8/10 Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: 2 Comments |

I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Thursday night might have sucked, but it makes for one helluva story. Everyone seems to be having a good chuckle at the ‘life imitating art’ incident that caused our original show to go up in flames. So we get an Evening with Dethklok- because we are special enough to make a trip back for on their one day off from the tour. Soilent Green and Chimaira can kiss it- we didn’t wanna see them anyways. Today I suffered from a metal conundrum. 6pm: John 5 Guitar Center Session 7:30pm: Rescheduled Dethklok show from last Thursday’s brutal Fillmore fire. I had to do both. Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: 2 Comments |

It was the most metal show that never happened. We are Dethklok Dethgroupies. We arrived to hear that there was a “situation” going on inside, and to wait against the wall. Minutes later, they had everyone evacuate. Fucking Dr. Rockso. He was freebasing and caught the place on fire! Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: 5 Comments |

I think I may have been listening to Bloody Kisses The Jagermeister Music tour brought the great purveyors of doom metal to SF last night. The heavily branded Grand Ballroom was filled with people who looked like they were going to either a funeral or a fight. Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: None |

It’s June 2nd and it’s 50 degrees outside. As I walk into the venue with the too long name, the wind slaps me in the face as a harsh reminder that summer never comes to SF. But that’s ok, because the sea of black and pale that awaits me looks like they live in a perpetual state of winter. I’m running late to see Peter Murphy. I was skeptical that he would even perform tonight, as he canceled last night’s Portland show. I’m taken aback as I walk into the room when I see seats everywhere and the performer on the stage already. After last night, an 8pm start time seemed utterly ridiculous. But these are the slightly older goths, hence the seats and lack of a mosh pit. Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: None |

The ’90s were pretty freakin’ cool. Culture coughed up some of the last seedy, dirty things before the regime change came and turned it all into abstinence, straight-edge, and boy bands. I was introduced to My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult via The Crow Filed under: Live and In The Flesh Comments: 2 Comments |

It was the beginning of a 3 day weekend, and Bottom of the Hill was percolating with the local hip crowd ready to kick it off right. The eclectic but well balanced lineup was ready to deliver: 3 locals, 1 LA neighbor, lots of chicks and a few dudes, some rock, some electro, and a lot of tambourine. Cafe du Nord has to be one of the most intimate venues in SF. The whole narrow room in the basement vibe makes it feel like a party at someone’s house. This is why it is such a great place to see a musician, and likewise why the venue is often used as a warm up for artists that could easily sell out something much larger.
