Where would you want to play your dream gig and why?
Posted on 04.28.08 by hardrockchick @ 8:37 pm

As you can tell from my live review metrics- the venue definitely plays a role at a show. And, man, there are some great ones here in SF- The Great American Music Hall, Bottom of the Hill, Bimbo’s 365, The Warfield. Austin has Stubb’s and The Backyard, San Antonio has (had?) Sunken Gardens.

I asked some bands where they would want to play their dream gig, and here’s what I got:

“Outer space, baby! I want to be the first band to play in outer space! Either on the moon or on a space station but mark my words…. I WILL sing for the first rock band in outer space and make musicical history!”

-Jonny Sculls, Mouth To Mouth

“That is a tough question, because there are so many KILLER venues to play a dream show at. I think Zen Vendetta, however, would choose a venue close to where we live and work, so as many of our friends and family would be able to come enjoy the show. Since we hail from the Livermore Valley, in the S.F. East Bay of California, we would love to play at the Oakland Arena, Shoreline Amphitheater, or Chronicle Pavillion. Those venues are all close to home.

Of course, a sell-out Wembley Stadium in England would be nice, too.”

-Zen Vendetta

“Personally, my dream gig would be cloven-footed, kinda shimmery with a golden sheen and slightly out of focus, soft, and running around in a forest until we meet in a tryst of really weird alien sex involving holes and feelers that i never knew existed, then waking up all sticky and sweating under my bedsheets. Oh wait, that was my dream last night. My dream gig would be a show with Qui, 400 Blows, Turbonegro, Meat Puppets, and Buzzcocks at Emo’s in Austin on a Saturday night. Or New Year’s Eve with the Melvins and Comets on Fire. But we already did both of those, so I guess I can die now!”

The Hard Rock Chick Wants to Know: What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?
Posted on 04.02.08 by hardrockchick @ 10:40 pm

It’s literally starting to sound like a broken record- all we are hearing is how the record industry is screwed. Slumping album sales. Industry layoffs. Established artists complaining about kids stealing music (while they live in mansions and drive Bentleys). With all that, what drives a young artist to pursue a music career nowadays?

I asked some bands, and here’s what I got:

The recording industry is getting dragged through the mud these days with illegal downloading and trading of music stealing it’s usual income. In the olden days record companies probably brought in 50 times as much money as they do today so they have to be a lot more careful where they put their money. For young artists starting out, like us, it means less bands are being signed and more signed bands are being dropped. It’s nothing to get too upset about though. If a band has what it takes and enjoys what they’re doing then I think there’s still a great career available for them in todays music industry.

-The Sessions

We all know what most bands are gonna say. It’s not like it used to be, there is nothing original out, bands are getting ripped off. We’ll I’d hate to break it to you but; the music industry was create by ripping artists off. Yes it is like it used to be. So do something original and mold it into what you want it to be! Stop waiting for someone else to do it.

The Hard Rock Chick Wants to Know: What’s your band’s New Year’s Resolution?
Posted on 01.30.08 by hardrockchick @ 10:20 pm

The new year tends to bring laundry lists of new year’s resolutions to us all. Of course, since January is almost over, they’ve all just about been broken.

I was wondering if band’s have new year’s resolutions, so I asked a few. And I realized that bands get to have much cooler resolutions than I do.

“…to drink more wine.”

Xu Xu Fang

“To drink more before passing out.”

Wired Desire

“Our new years resolution is to be a better band, better songs, better shows. To write an album that will be moving and cathartic. To play the East coast and to meet new people and indoctrinate them into our cult all before 2009 smacks in the collective kisser with it’s bear like paw.”

The Hard Rock Chick Wants to Know: What’s the most memorable thing an audience member has said to you after a show?
Posted on 10.30.07 by hardrockchick @ 9:17 pm

At smaller shows, you can often see band members milling around the crowd. This can give fans the rare and sometimes unfortunate opportunity to interact with the band- the very thing that the security guards and barriers try to prevent at larger shows. While most audience members behave themselves, that doesn’t prevent them from saying something weird. Luckily the Hard Rock Chick is shy, and refrains from gush sessions that might borderline on groupie talk.

Here are a couple of great quotes from some bands who answered this edition of ‘The Hard Rock Chick Wants to Know’:

“What’s the most memorable thing that an audience member has said to you after a show?”

“‘You Guys are actually good!’… then the rest are rated R.”

-Oliver Future

“Most memorable? It was…’Awesome show! Fuck- sorry I have to run, I just shelfed a pill and I think I’ve just shit myself!’”

-Dukes of Windsor

The Hard Rock Chick Wants to Know: What goes through your head before you go on stage?
Posted on 09.19.07 by hardrockchick @ 10:28 pm

There’s always been something about watching a band walk out on stage to see their audience that really gets me intrigued. I think part of it is my excitement for being there, about to hear them do their thing. Another part of it is me trying to imagine what that must feel like.

So, I decided to ask some folks:

What goes through your head before you go on stage?

“There’s just one thing we think about before we murder cows: J.U.I.C.Y. B.A.D.U.S.S.Y.”

HOTTUB

hottub

“Head!!!!”

Felix,Tokyo Decadence

“Jameson.”

Lance, Land Shark

“I really hope I don’t piss on myself tonight.”

What’s your favorite song to perform and why?
Posted on 09.10.07 by hardrockchick @ 10:00 pm

The performer’s challenge: how to deal with playing the same songs night after night. I’ve seen a lot of bands several times- and there are some songs that just seem to spark for them on stage. Perhaps it’s the meaning behind the song that provides the fuel, the memories contained within the words that make it never get old. Whatever it is- you can often tell which songs the performer seems to enjoy most.

The Hard Rock Chick asked a few artists about their favorite song to perform. I told them to have fun with it- and you’ll see that some of them did:

What is your favorite song to perform live and why?

“Lately, I’ve really enjoyed doing my “VICTORY” track live. There’s something about it when the beat hits and I just feel fucking mentally on-point when I spit that track live. Every word hits perfect and I feel the electricity from my brain making its way into peoples ears. And just the overbearing russian chorus you know gets me feeling really in touch with my homeland (russia).”

-Ivan Ives

VICTORY

“Well, lately we have been enjoying genre mashing. At the moment we are on a kick of mixing classical with punk rock.
this is our favorite piece to play as of late. It’s by Chopin…Opus 33, No. 2: Mazurka No. 23, in D major and the lyrics are from a Johnny Rotten poetry book.”

-immigrant

While I don’t have an example of the song described above, here’s one from their forthcoming album.

Idiot Smile

“That’s a cruel question! Too many possible answers. On some days I like to hum Wipe Out. Why? Because I am sitting on my surfboard and seeing a large wave approach. That’s live right? If I am on stage with Astra Heights, I think I get a kick out of the Whole World Changes because there’s a somewhat improvisational Spaghetti Western/Morricone flavored intro that often starts the song. If that was Greek to you, think Pulp Fiction theme. It’s a somewhat playful and liberating moment. At the end of the day I am just happy to perform live period; be it a silly cover for a someone’s wedding reception or a rockin’ tune with Astra Heights in a club.”

-Bernard, Guitarist for Astra Heights

Partial song youtube clip….look for their album coming soon!
